NOTE: This is from my diary, written in January, 2009.
I went to the health centre today for the medical checkup.
All new students for this semester went there, both locals and international students. I knew I would meet the Yemeni girl again.
Her face beamed with excitement when she saw me. She smiled sweetly.
"Sister Nisa, Faridah told me you have english-english dictionary. I want to borrow. Faridah is good. Don't give to her. I'm not good. I don't understand in class."
I giggled at her. She wanted to borrow the dictionary first even when she knew Faridah had already asked from me earlier.
"OK," I replied, smilling at her.
"I need to do my homework for this monday. When will you need it back?"
"Actually.......I haven't started to study YET," I gave her a big smile, feeling awful admitting that.
"So when will you need back?" she asked again.
"It's ok. I have digital dictionary in my laptop."
"You can share with her...she's your roomate right? One book 2 persons..." She never stopped smilling.
I giggled again at her. She struggled to choose the right words when she spoke English yet she didn't give up. I like such attitude.
When she was leaving, she whispered to us, "When the sisters (her Arab friends) are with me, I cannot speak good English. When I am alone, I speak good English."
We laughed at her. She was so funny.
